@larand FW (very little) IW, Markdown as originally defined was just an HTML shorthand that allowed freely mixing in HTML tags as needed or desired. But the same needs that drove BBCode to be basically a neutered HTML led to conveniently limiting that feature of Markdown as it spread into the same niches. :\
