JSON should compress pretty nicely. Gzip and it'll shrink a good amount. :)

Ah, heh! I imagine there's a readline library you can pull in. I also used to use the trick of running stuff under rlwrap - it intercepts input and adds editing support; the program run under it only sees stuff after you send it on through rlwrap. Run like rlwrap cat. Includes line history as well. :)

Some have a "poetry" mode for that sort of thing. I find just sticking a tag at the end of a line works with many.

Hah. I'm doing this as part of a team for a fun competition at work, so feeling like a crummy contributor though. All reading and no hacking gets us no closer to finishing what we have planned! Looking up for tomorrow though. :)
