I've never found Duolingo motivating enough or instructive enough to keep me engaged. But it seems to be exactly what a lot of people wanted, so I'm glad it's around. :)

That book came up a lot in Esperanto stuff. :) I used to read mailing lists in Esperanto. Could find short stories and general discussion.

If the idea intrigues you, Arika Okrent's In the Land of Invented Languages gives a fun account of the history and flavor of various languages through the author's personal experience with them.

I'd expect significant reading speed and comprehension increases between six months and two years.

I like picking out a book I want to read in the language, then revisiting the book periodically to see what sense I can make of it then. Provides a very personal measure of progress, and a reward when you unlock comfortable-enough reading fluency.

Blackout shades are awesome. We've been moving to dual blackout and regular shades for the bedrooms. Great for afternoon naps.
