Probably. It’s basically “when I start a new window, change the preference for style to the next one.”

You can also embed other first-party components, but the whole point is to mostly not do so, so.

Last I looked, desktop support for even Mac and Win was pretty rough. Basic stuff like decently functioning window resize was under construction. If you wanted to push Flutter Linux forward, now would probably be a good time. Even the Web is not out of beta as a target platform - phones are where Flutter focused to start.

Fundamentally I don’t expect Flutter apps to fit in on any platform except maybe Android. I see them as promising a consistent branded experience across devices, not a per-device appearance. But one that actually looks pretty good, unlike the hell that is Swing apps. Sun really should have paid some designers back when.

(You can aim at per-device appearance, but it’s definitely more work, and it’s an uphill fight, because you’re doing all your own rendering rather than letting the platform do it for you.)

What are your reservations when it comes to Linux / Ubuntu in particular?

Dang, lot doing! It sounds like you’re in a lot better situation than a year and a half ago. Welcome back. :)

Why would adding a CNAME record even take more than 5 min - if that?

It coexisted with Portrait for a couple years. Just had a look now, and it’s been subsumed into the photo aspect ratio picker:

  • Tap the arrow at the top middle of the screen, then
  • tap the aspect button in the bottom middle, then
  • pick Square from the options of 4:3, Square, and 16:9.

Today’s ear worm: Lana Del Ray’s “Dark Paradise”, only refashioned with “Jazzercise” instead.
