Logged out of work Slacks for a week. Now that’s vacation.
@matigo I might have to try that. I wound up aiming a fan at the darn thing recently, to try to get it to stop throttling itself.
@variablepulserate I find myself needing a laptop and am just like “if I could just wait another year…” because an ARM laptop sounds pretty great.

@matigo It’s partly that. But also misaligned incentives when it comes to performance, otherwise the person signing off on the job would be telling them to address perf issues. It seems good enough to everyone involved, and if it’s commercial software, also to the person buying it for an amount with a lot of zeros at the end. (And then the peons finally get it on their hobbled, creaking laptops, and suffer.)

@matigo Yeah. For database backed apps anyway, I like the ideas in http://postgrest.org/, though I’ve never used it in anger.
@matigo I feel like the history of open source databases is MySQL and Postgres hating on each other. 😆
@matigo I remember my ear getting uncomfortable after not even all that long. Even with modern cellphones. Using headphones for phone calls is so much nicer.
@phoneboy YouTube only keeps playing when a mobile device is locked if you’ve ponied up for their monthly service, no?
But many also use the youtube app, which continues to play even when the lock screen is enabled.
(Looks like there might be some hacky workarounds for non-subscribers, but they seem fragile.)
I don’t think it’s that relevant to the overall point he’s making, except that it totally snapped me out of the argument for a bit, as someone who’s been stymied by YouTube going out of its way to block background playback before. >.<
